Roma
The Roma Working Group consists of churches and organizations who are focused on meeting the physical, social, and spiritual needs of the Roma residents of Uzhgorod within the five camps and the general population.
Over 6000 Roma live within the city limits of Uzhgorod. Most live within five camps, but many live within the general population, mostly in the Radvanka region. Those living within the camps survive in extreme conditions of poverty – many without adequate shelter, drinking water, access to adequate food, rampant disease (affecting 80% of the population), and high unemployment. Only 20% of the children attend schools and most of the adult population is illiterate. Many lack legal documents to register residency and receive social welfare from the State. Some camps are unreached with the Gospel, but others have thriving churches in their midst.
